Making it at home allows you to enjoy fresh, restaurant-style sushi with minimal ingredients and effort.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sushi rice
- 2 cups water
- ¼ cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 6–8 slices fresh sushi-grade salmon (about ¼ inch thick each)
- Wasabi (optional)
- Soy sauce, for serving
- Pickled ginger, for garnish
Preparation Steps
Step 1: Prepare the Sushi Rice
- Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Cook the rice with 2 cups water in a rice cooker or pot according to package instructions.
- In a small saucepan, heat rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until the sugar dissolves.
- Gently fold the vinegar mixture into the cooked rice and let it cool slightly.
Step 2: Shape the Rice
With wet hands to prevent sticking, take a small amount of rice (about 2 tablespoons) and shape it into a compact, oval mound. Repeat for all pieces of rice.
Step 3: Prepare the Salmon
Slice the sushi-grade salmon into thin, even pieces, approximately the size of the rice mounds.
Step 4: Assemble the Nigiri
If desired, lightly spread a small amount of wasabi on top of each rice mound. Place a slice of salmon over each rice mound and press gently to secure.
Step 5: Serve
Arrange the salmon nigiri on a serving plate and serve with soy sauce and pickled ginger on the side. Enjoy immediately for the freshest taste.
